Running for Cover. And Not Finding Any.

As predicted, Congressman McMahon has taken refuge in a tough guy approach to the radical health care proposal being bullied through Congress. It is to be expected, since he doesn't want to be seen as a cheerleader for what will prove to be an extraordinarily painful and destructive initiative.

It won't work, though. Not as long as we vow to stay informed and engaged.

This from the Staten Island Advance (SILive) today:
Said McMahon: "... I am concerned that the proposed health care bill will be paid for at the expense of our small business owners ... essentially penalizing (them)." [snip]

But Staten Island Rep. Michael McMahon predicted there will be a new way of providing health care in this country, and paying for it, by year's end, if not by Congress' August recess..."
Sound familiar? It should. Last week we wrote:
Do not be surprised if you see the Congressman expressing "deep concerns" about the health care bill, insinuating that he may not vote for it until he knows how it will be paid for. Ultimately, though, after some minor tweaks and fixes, he will toe the Obama/Pelosi line.
Now under normal circumstances this tactic would work quite well; it makes it seem as if he is putting the well-being and interests of his constituency before party loyalty - but that's all smoke and mirrors. The truth is that we are fools if we let him shape the message this way.

The underlying theme here is that despite the "tweaks and fixes," our Congressman is in favor of socialized medicine. McMahon - along with all the other politicians who will vote for this bill but are not personally bound by it - is ultimately going to vote to dump the greatest health care system in the history of the world.

Detractors (and there are many) will say that I'm being picky, that even when the Congressman does work for the benefit of his constituents I am looking for and finding fault. This is not true. The reality is that no matter what portions of socialized medicine McMahon objects to, he will still, in the end, support socialized medicine.

As I have said before, will say here, and will say again on August 2nd in Conference House Park: "Time and time again our Congressman votes us into the twilight world of soft tyranny..."

Just wanted to post what I sent to our Congressman today on the morning of our Tea Party at the Conference House:
The people of Staten Island are asking Congress and our President to slow down and pay attention to what the people want. We do not want government to fix everything. We want it to stay out of the way so that Americans can fix things- the way they have since the start of this amazing country. Listen to the message of the patriots at the Conference House today. These are engaged, patriotic Americans who are paying attention and reading the bills that are being expedited through our Congress. There are many Islanders who will speak with votes when the time comes, even if you don't hear their voices now. Thank you for taking the time to read this email. God bless you and America.

Frank, could you please tell me how I can become involved with your organization (I don't wish to just 'show up' at protests, I'd really want to get hands-on) as a volunteer?

I've clicked on the "Contact Us" portion of your website, but alas, the client is not connected. I've put this site on my Blogger follow list, so you can contact me through Blogger.

Thanks much!

I sent this to Congressman McMahon 8/6/09.

Congressman McMahon,

I strongly urge you to vote against the Health Care Reform Bill !!!

According to the CBO this bill will cost a trillion dollars over 10 years and will be unsustainable.

1. This unparalleled spending could bankrupt the United States!

2. The public option will result in a single payer system which will cause the loss of approximately 3 million American jobs!

3. This Medicaid Bill is modeled after the social medicine in Canada and the UK where treatment is rationed, delayed or denied.

4. Many senior citizens in Canada and the UK die waiting for treatment.

5. 80% of Americans are happy with their Health care, choice of doctors and hospitals, including me and my family. The Public option will eliminate our coverage since private sector cannot compete with the government.

"DON"T THROW OUT WITH THE BABY WITH THE BATH WATER". FIX OUR PRESENT SYSTEM!!

The President has stated that part of the cost of health reform will come from eliminating waste, duplication and fraud. This is a must do!!

Tort reform: Attorneys that file frivolous or unsuccessful law suits for medical malpractice be required to pay all expenses for the defendants and the attorneys. This will lower doctor's malpractice insurance and the need to perform unnecessary or duplicate (CYA) testing.

Many of the uninsured Americans can afford insurance but choose not to spend the money. Many have lost their insurance when they were laid off and do not qualify for Medicaid, they will return to the work force in the near term. In the meantime, the Government could pay for their insurance. Those working American families' that cannot afford medical insurance should receive an insurance voucher. This could be paid for by reduced spending, savings and/or public funds. Insurance companies should be mandated to accept Americans with preexisting conditions.

THIS IS THE TIME TO FIX OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM, NOT DISTROY OUR COUNTRY!!!

Here is the email I sent thanks to you providing the link..

If you're going to continue representing us, I would hope you would vote for what is best for us as a country. This means not voting for the Health care bill. This means from now on reading any so-called stimulus bills that come to you in the future. I saw you were boasting about the millions spent on Ferry refurbishing, but how many jobs did that create? Isn't that money supposed to come out of the transportation allocations? No one is saying, and I have heard the GOP's proposals, that nothing needs to be done. You don't need a 1000 page health care overhaul. You do need some of the things we know could help like allowing us to buy health insurance across state lines and tort reform. I believe the Democrats do not want those reforms just so health care costs will rise and then they can push threw this despicable bill. They don't want tort reform because the lobbyists, tort lawyers, don't want it. It is obvious. The thing is this bill has nothing to do with our health or our care especially for the elderly. The Democrats who say this is not going to lead to single payer system are lying. I've heard from their own mouths, in speeches given years before the election of Obama how several of them, including Obama himself looks forward 10 years down the line to single payer. Please stand up to the leftists in your party. You were not elected by Democrats alone and you were supposed to be a "blue dog". It is about time you and others took BACK your party.
